LoP opposes Tipra Motha's rally cancellation order

Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury on Sunday vehemently opposed Tripura Police’s move to deny permission for Youth Tipra Federation—the youth arm of ruling ally Tipra Motha—sponsored public rally slated on November 07 next.

Speaking to the reporters at the CPIM state headquarters, the CPIM politburo member said, “In a democratic system, the government should endeavour to ensure that all the political parties should exercise their political rights freely without any hindrance. If the government or the ruling party feels that the agenda of the proposed political programme is against the interest of the public at large, it should counter it politically. Instead of doing that, if permission is denied, it sends out a wrong message.”

Earlier, senior Congress leaders urged the government of Tripura to deny permission citing law and order concerns.

According to Chaudhury, the question of law and order breakdown doesn’t really arise since Tipra Motha, the party which had convened the rally is a constituent of the BJP-led ruling coalition.

“If a ruling party breaks law and order, the blame shall come on the government which is being run by it. All political parties, I feel, carry that much wisdom to decide on do’s and don’ts,” he pointed out.

Chaudhury also reacted to the recent statement of MP Biplab Kumar Deb who had allegedly said that the tripartite accord with Tipra Motha is now being scrutinised by a parliamentary select committee.

“His statement proves how BJP has no intentions to fulfil its promise with Tipra Motha. An accord signed between three parties requires no intervention from the parliament. No amendments to the constitution are required here,” he added.
