A new chapter in tourism development is taking place in South Tripura, with the picturesque Ludhua Organic Tea Garden drawing hundreds of visitors every day following the trial run of its boating facilities on June 17.

The tourism project, developed around the historic tea garden, is yet to be formally inaugurated, and several works are still underway.

According to Tea Garden official Sujit Shil, the proposed tourism destination will be named “Ludhua Tea Garden Adventure Zone” and is expected to feature homestays, boating facilities and opportunities for visitors to enjoy the garden’s traditional chemical-free green tea.

If everything goes as per the plan, the tourism centre is expected to be formally inaugurated by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha in the coming days.

At present, three jet boats and two kayaks are available on a nearly two-acre water body within the tea garden. The boating facilities have already emerged as a major attraction for visitors, with the number of tourists reportedly increasing since the trial run.

Plans are also being considered to introduce a ropeway at the site in the future. To further enhance the appeal of the destination, initiatives have been taken to plant different varieties of fruit-bearing, flowering and medicinal plants.

The tourism initiative is part of a broader plan to develop Rupaichhari block as a tourism hub, spearheaded by Rupaichhari BDO Pritam Debnath. Under the plan, major attractions including the Mahamuni Buddhist Temple, Ludhua Tea Garden and Maitri Setu are being linked through improved tourism infrastructure.

Taking inspiration from Kerala’s backwater tourism model, four-seater pedal boats and kayaking facilities have already been introduced. Facilities such as drinking water, trekking routes, rest areas and modern toilets are also being developed for visitors.

The growing footfall at Ludhua has led local residents and tourism enthusiasts to view the tea garden as an emerging destination capable of opening up new possibilities for tourism in South Tripura.

Spread across approximately 1,252.85 acres, Ludhua Tea Garden is known for producing high-quality organic black and green tea. The tea is cultivated using organic manure and bio-pesticides under a chemical-free production process and has gained recognition in international markets.

According to sources, with the support of two Kolkata-based companies, tea produced at Ludhua is being exported to markets in the Middle East, Europe and Southeast Asia. Its distinctive aroma, smooth taste and fully organic production process have contributed to growing demand among overseas buyers.
