A major railway accident was narrowly averted on Sunday morning when the Dharmanagar–Agartala DEMU passenger train collided with a small goods-laden truck near SK Para Station under Longtharai Valley subdivision.
According to reports, the goods vehicle, loaded with brick chips, was crossing the railway line to reach a nearby village from SK Para when its front wheel got stuck on the track. The place is known locally as an unofficial crossing point where vehicles often move across the railway line, locals said.
As the Dharmanagar-bound DEMU train approached from a distance, the pilot repeatedly blew the whistle after noticing the stranded vehicle. Despite frantic efforts by the driver and local people to move the truck off the track, they failed to do so in time. The train eventually hit the truck, dragging it a short distance before coming to a halt.
Due to the collision the vehicle flew off the track, but fortunately, no casualties or major damage were reported. Railway officials said the quick response of the train pilot prevented what could have been a serious mishap.
Local residents have demanded proper safety measures, including a level crossing or barriers at the spot, to prevent such incidents in the future.
