The opposition CPIM organised a rally and public meeting in Dharmanagar Monday, intensifying its campaign ahead of the upcoming by-election, party leaders said.
The programme began around 11 am with a procession that started from the Dharmanagar Sub-Divisional Office and passed through key roads of the town before culminating at the northern bank of Kali dighi, where a public meeting was held.
Former Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar addressed the gathering as the chief speaker. Several party leaders, including AIDWA leader Krishna Rakshit, CITU leader Amal Chakraborty, party candidate Amitabha Datta, district secretary Abhijit De and sub-divisional secretary Ratan Ray, were also present along with legislators and other senior functionaries from district and state units.
Addressing the rally, Sarkar launched a sharp attack on the BJP led state government, alleging deterioration in governance and a rise in unemployment.
He claimed that employment had reached “record levels” and alleged that the rule of law in the state had weakened significantly.
He also pointed to an alleged shortage of staff in government departments and claimed that common people were facing difficulties in registering cases at police stations.
“In a democratic system, people should have unhindered access to justice and administrative services,” he said, while criticising the functioning of the current administration.
