A 28-year-old married woman was stabbed to death in the Kamalasagar area on Saturday night when she, accompanied by her sister, was on her way home to Nehal Chandra Nagar from the Kasba Kali temple. The deceased had reportedly gone to the annual fair organised at the temple with her family and friends.
The deceased was identified as Sujita Deb. Eyewitness accounts suggested that her father-in-law, Sanjit Nama, and brother-in-law, Nayan Nama, stopped her on the road, following which a quarrel erupted. The deceased’s husband, Pritam Nama, and her sister, Pinki Deb, tried to pacify Sanjit Nama, who was reportedly extremely angry at the time, when Nayan Nama allegedly stabbed her repeatedly beside the road. She fell unconscious and was later declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
She was immediately shifted to Madhupur hospital, from where she was referred to TMC and GB Pant Hospital, respectively.
Speaking to the media, Pritam Nama said, “She (the deceased) was my second wife. I got married earlier, but our marriage couldn’t survive and I decided to get separated. Three years ago, Sujita and I got married and since then we have been living in rented accommodation away from my own house. My family didn’t accept our marriage.”
Sujita’s sister, Pinki Deb, said, “I have been staying with my sister since August 28. We went to the fair last evening and, on our way back, her father-in-law and younger brother-in-law suddenly arrived at the location and stopped us. From their behaviour, I could figure out that they were not ready to accept her and started yelling at her husband.”
The deceased’s mother and brother demanded strict punishment for the accused persons.
