What initially looked like a case of domestic violence and atrocities against women turned out to be an example of how fatal the consequences of extramarital affairs can be.
Police investigation into the killing of a woman in Kamalasagar Bhadra Mela revealed that the deceased, identified as Sujita Das (28), was not legally married to Pritam Nama, whose father and brother are prime accused in the brutal murder.
The deceased and Pritam Nama had been living together as live-in partners for the last three-and-a-half years, despite both of them being previously married.
Pritam Nama's family could not accept the relationship, and eventually, things took an ugly turn on Saturday night at Kamalasagar Bhadra Mela.
Police took prompt action and arrested Nayan Nama, the younger brother of Pritam, who allegedly stabbed the deceased, leading to her death.
Police on Sunday took the arrested accused to the place of occurrence as part of the investigation. A forensic team also accompanied the police during the visit to examine the scene and reconstruct the sequence of events, police sources said.
Das, a married woman and mother of a daughter, had visited the Kamalasagar Bhadra Mela with Pritam Nama, a married man who has a son. The two had allegedly been in a relationship for around three-and-a-half years.
According to sources, Pritam had left his family and had been living at Das's house in the ONGC First Gate area, although the two had not married. His father, Sanjit Nama, and younger brother, Nayan, allegedly opposed the relationship and had repeatedly tried to persuade him to return to his family.
The matter had also led to meetings between the two families. Despite all efforts, Pritam allegedly continued to live with Das.
On the day of the incident, Das and Pritam went to the fair. On the other hand, Sanjit Nama and his younger son, Nayan Nama, had put up a stall there. The couple passed by the stall multiple times.
Some local youths noticed the couple and asked the father why his son was roaming around with another woman. Sanjit then called Pritam from a distance and questioned him, following which an argument broke out.
Police sources further revealed that Pritam became angry and allegedly began assaulting his father. Nayan then intervened after seeing the altercation and attempted to separate his brother from their father.
It has been alleged that Das also tried to attack them during the altercation. Nayan then allegedly picked up a knife from the mela area and struck Das on the neck. She was fatally stabbed.
The incident occurred right in front of the Kasba Eco Park area. Das was taken to Madhupur Primary Health Centre. As her condition was stated to be serious, she was referred to GBP Hospital, where she died.
Police, after receiving information about the incident, arrested Nayan from Hapania Hospital later that night.
Das's mother, Gouri Das, accompanied by family members, subsequently lodged a complaint at Madhupur police station against Sanjit Nama and Nayan Nama.
Nayan was produced before the Bishalgarh Sub-Divisional Court on Sunday, where police sought his remand.
