Mass Left Protests shake Tripura: 'Jail Bharo' in Agartala and Dharmanagar

Agartala turned into a flashpoint of political agitation on Monday as thousands of Left supporters poured onto the streets in a massive 'Jail Bharo movement' against what they termed the “anti-people policies” of the BJP government.

Carrying red flags and raising slogans against price rise, unemployment, and alleged attacks on workers and farmers, the demonstrators marched through the city before converging near Post Office Chowmuhani.

The protest, organized under the banner of the Left Front, was anchored around an 11-point charter of demands safeguarding workers’ and farmers’ rights. 

Senior leaders including former Chief Minister and Politburo member Manik Sarkar, CPI(M) state secretary and Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, along with Manik Dey and Narayan Kar, led the march. 

The heavy turnout quickly escalated tensions as police erected multiple barricades to contain the rally. However, the sheer force of numbers saw protesters break through the barriers, leading to scuffles with security personnel and a charged atmosphere in the heart of the capital.

Traffic movement across key stretches of Agartala was severely disrupted, prompting deployment of additional police and security forces to restore order. Authorities confirmed that surveillance has been intensified to prevent further disturbances.

Meanwhile, in Dharmanagar, North Tripura, a parallel Jail Bharo agitation unfolded under the joint initiative of CITU, AIKS, TKMU, and GMP. Centered on the slogan “Save the Nation, Save the People,” the protest echoed the same 11-point demands linked to livelihood, employment, and price control. 

Beginning around noon from the CPI(M) subdivision office, the rally drew participants from surrounding areas and grew into a large procession through the town’s main roads.

Police and paramilitary forces had already fortified Dharmanagar with barricades and heavy deployment. As the protest swelled, many demonstrators were detained and taken to the Vivekananda Shatabarshiki Bhavan, which was converted into a temporary jail.

Organizers accused the government of ignoring the rising cost of living, lack of jobs, and erosion of workers’ and farmers’ rights, vowing to continue the struggle until livelihood security is ensured.

Both Agartala and Dharmanagar witnessed heightened tension, but authorities emphasized that strict security measures were in place to prevent untoward incidents. 

The Left leadership has warned that the agitation will intensify in the coming days if their demands remain unmet, signaling a prolonged phase of confrontation in Tripura’s political landscape.
