The Animal Resources Development Department (ARDD) of Tripura organized a one-day piglet distribution programme under the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Pig – NEH & SCSP Component at Jagannathpur Gram Panchayat, Chandipur RD Block on Thursday. The event was attended by Sudhangshu Das, Minister for ARDD, Fisheries and SC Welfare, who personally handed over piglets to beneficiaries.
Â
A total of 30 beneficiaries from the Fatikroy Assembly Constituency received piglets during the programme, which is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to promote animal husbandry as a sustainable source of income in rural areas.
Â
Speaking at the distribution ceremony, Minister Das highlighted the importance of such initiatives in strengthening the socio-economic fabric of villages. “This programme will not only support rural families in improving their livelihoods but also contribute to building a self-reliant society,” he said. He added that livestock-based projects are being prioritized to generate employment, enhance nutrition, and empower marginalized communities.
Â
Officials from the Deputy Director’s Office (Unakoti) noted that the scheme is designed to provide technical support, training, and monitoring to ensure that beneficiaries can successfully rear the piglets and expand their income base. The initiative also aligns with the state’s broader vision of diversifying rural livelihoods and reducing dependence on traditional agriculture alone.
Â
Local residents welcomed the programme, describing it as a practical step toward rural development. With growing demand for pork in Tripura and the Northeast, experts believe that such schemes hold strong commercial potential and can significantly boost the rural economy.
