The six-day-long search for a missing teenager ended in tragedy on Friday morning when the body of Dharmajit Chakma (17) was recovered from the waters of Dumboor Lake near Narikel Kunja.Â
Â
The discovery brought a wave of grief across the locality, where residents had been anxiously awaiting news since his disappearance on January 4.
Â
According to police sources, Dharmajit, a resident of Bhakta Para under Gandacherra subdivision, had gone missing while returning home with his grandfather by boat after selling kul (jujube) at the Narikel Kunja picnic spot. Reportedly suffering from epilepsy, the boy suddenly fell ill or lost balance and slipped into the deep waters. Despite his grandfather’s cries for help, bystanders could not rescue him in time.
Â
The incident immediately drew the attention of the Fire Department and Gandacherra’s disaster response team, who launched an extensive search operation. On the following day, a special team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) arrived from Agartala and carried out continuous search efforts. However, despite several days of attempts, no trace of the boy was found.
Â
Finally, at around 5 a.m. on Friday, local residents spotted a body floating near the helipad ground adjacent to Narikel Kunja. Police rushed to the site, retrieved the body, and confirmed the identity as Dharmajit Chakma.
Â
The tragic recovery has plunged his family into deep mourning and cast a pall of sorrow over the entire area. Residents of Narikel Kunja and surrounding villages expressed shock and grief, remembering the young boy whose life was cut short in the waters of Dumboor Lake.
