A heart-rending appeal for humanity has emerged from Tripura, where 23-month-old Manashree Choudhury battles Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a rare genetic disorder that threatens her life.Â
Â
On Friday, Kalyanpur MLA Pinaki Das Choudhury stepped forward with a contribution of Rs 1 lakh, handing over a cheque to Manashree’s father, Dhruba Choudhury, while urging citizens across the state and country to unite in extending financial support for the child’s treatment.
Â
Doctors have stressed that Manashree must receive the life-saving gene therapy injection Zolgensma before she turns two on September 3. The therapy, administered only once through intravenous infusion, offers the possibility of restoring her to a normal life. However, the cost of the injection is staggering – estimated at Rs 14–16 crore, though reduced import duties could bring it down to Rs 8–9 crore.
Â
So far, contributions from individuals and organizations have raised approximately Rs 5.5–6 crore, but a massive shortfall remains. With limited time left, Manashree must travel outside the state at least 15–20 days before the scheduled treatment date, intensifying the urgency of fundraising efforts.
Â
Speaking to the press, MLA Pinaki Das Choudhury emphasized that saving a child’s life requires collective responsibility. “Society’s greatest strength lies in its unity. Every contribution, no matter how small, can pave the way for Manashree’s recovery,” he said, expressing hope that widespread generosity will ease the family’s burden.
Â
Her father, Dhruba Choudhury, explained that SMA is a complex genetic condition, and timely administration of Zolgensma is critical. “This is our only chance. If the treatment is given in time, my daughter can live a normal life. I appeal to everyone to come forward with compassion and help us,” he said, his voice carrying both desperation and hope.
