MPLAD fund utilisation: Performance of Tripura MPs far below national average

Tripura performance in terms of utilisation of MPLAD (Member of Parliament Local Area Development Fund) appears to be poor with an extremely negligible project completion rate. According to data available in digital platform Empowered India, a total of Rs 41.7 crore has been allocated under the three MPs for carrying out development projects in their respective constituencies.

Out of that only 22.78 percent funds had been utilised with recommendation of around 100 projects but so far only one project has been completed.
As per the national ranking listed in the website, Tripura stands in the 22nd position among 36 states and Union Territories. At the national level, the total funds allocated so far stands at Rs 703 crore out of which Rs 520 crore has been utilized with an overall utilisation rate of 74 percent. The number of projects completed stands at 4,413.
If considered constituency wise, East Tripura Lok Sabha MP Kriti Devi Debbarman’s performance is least impressive. A total of Rs 14.7 crore has been allocated under her authority as MPLAD funds. Out of that 12.7 percent of that funds which accounts for Rs 1.9 crore has been utilised so far. The total number of projects recommended stands at 49 but none of them have been completed yet.
In West Tripura which is represented by former CM Biplab Kumar Deb, the funds utilisation stands at 31.1 percent which translates to Rs 4.6 crore. As many as 29 projects had been recommended and none completed. Deb also got a sum of Rs 14.7 crore under his authority.
Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee stands as the only parliamentarian in Tripura who got one project completed by the funds under his watch. A total of Rs 12.3 crore has been allocated as MPLAD funds. Rs 3.5 crore which is roughly 24.9 percent of the total allocations had been utilised. Out of 56 projects recommended, one project has been completed.
