Banking services across India, including Tripura, were severely disrupted on Friday as employees observed a nationwide strike demanding the introduction of a five-day banking week. The strike was organized under the banner of the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), which represents multiple employee organizations.
The central demand placed at the forefront is that banks remain closed on both Saturdays and Sundays, thereby limiting services to five working days a week. Employee unions argue that such a move would reduce excessive workload, improve work-life balance, and ultimately enhance the quality of banking services in the long run.
In Tripura, banking operations in Agartala and other districts were affected as employees joined the strike, leading to closure of several branches. Customers faced difficulties in accessing branch-based services such as deposits, withdrawals, and loan processing. However, online banking, ATMs, and other digital platforms remained functional, providing partial relief.
Union leaders stated that discussions with authorities on this issue have been ongoing for years, but with no concrete resolution, employees were compelled to resort to strike action once again. “Our demands are not new. We have repeatedly raised them, but without meaningful progress, we are left with no choice but to protest,” union representatives said.
The UFBU emphasized that the demand is not merely about reducing working hours but about ensuring efficiency and sustainability in the banking sector. They believe that a five-day week would align Indian banking practices with global standards, while also motivating staff and improving customer service.
The strike has highlighted the growing debate over banking reforms, employee welfare, and modernization of India’s financial sector. Employee unions have warned that unless their demands are addressed, they will continue to intensify their agitation.
