Panchayat Minister Kishor Barman leads preparations for World Environment Day Gram Sabhas

In the run-up to World Environment Day 2026, State Panchayat Minister Kishor Barman chaired a high-level virtual meeting from the State Secretariat on Tuesday, bringing together elected representatives and administrative officials from Zilla Parishads, Panchayat Samitis, and Gram Panchayats. The session focused on preparations for the Special Gram Sabhas scheduled to be held across the state on June 5.

The meeting underscored the importance of turning the observance into a mass movement for environmental sustainability. Minister Barman directed local bodies to prioritize key initiatives such as water conservation, plastic waste management, cleanliness drives, tree plantation campaigns, and public awareness programmes. He emphasized that effective grassroots implementation and community participation would be crucial to the success of these efforts.

Calling for collective responsibility, Barman urged citizens to actively contribute to building cleaner, greener, and environmentally friendly villages.

He noted that the Gram Sabhas would serve as platforms to engage communities directly on pressing environmental issues, while also strengthening awareness initiatives linked to sustainable rural development.

Officials from across the state pledged to ensure smooth execution of the programmes, with a focus on mobilizing maximum public involvement. The minister concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to making World Environment Day not just a symbolic occasion, but a catalyst for long-term ecological action in Tripura.
