In a remarkable stride toward rural self-reliance, a group of twenty women from Dwarikapur Kancher Dhila village under Kalyanpur RD Block has successfully cultivated pink oyster mushrooms for the first time, creating a new model of livelihood innovation in Tripura. The initiative, supported by the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM), has drawn widespread appreciation for empowering women and strengthening the local economy.
The women, organized as the Moon Mushroom Producer Group, have been experimenting with mushroom farming for the past two years. While they initially focused on common oyster varieties, their determination to diversify led to the introduction of pink oyster mushrooms this season. Known for their vibrant color, nutritional richness, and growing market demand, the crop has already generated enthusiasm among consumers and traders in the region.
Behind this success lies a story of perseverance. Members of the group faced early challenges ranging from technical hurdles to resource constraints, but their patience, discipline, and willingness to learn carried them forward. Regular training, technical guidance, and monitoring provided by the Block Mission Management Unit (BMMU) of Kalyanpur and the District Mission Management Unit (DMMU) of Khowai proved crucial in equipping the women with modern cultivation techniques.
Local markets have responded positively, with the pink oyster mushroom quickly gaining popularity for its taste and health benefits. Experts believe the commercial potential of this variety is significant, offering new income opportunities for rural producers. Encouraged by the initial success, the group now plans to expand cultivation on a larger scale, aiming not only to boost their own earnings but also to inspire other self-help groups across the district.
Community leaders and TRLM officials have hailed the initiative as a shining example of women-led rural entrepreneurship, demonstrating how collective effort and innovation can transform livelihoods. Observers note that such ventures are vital for strengthening Tripura’s rural economy, providing sustainable alternatives to traditional income sources, and fostering resilience among women in villages.
