The aftermath of Monday’s violence during the Village Committee elections in Tripura saw leaders from both ruling and opposition parties visiting hospitals to meet injured workers and candidates, underscoring the gravity of the incident and the political tensions surrounding the polls.
Abhishek Debroy’s Visit to GBP Hospital
Tripura BJP state president and MLA Abhishek Debroy visited GBP Hospital in Agartala on Tuesday to meet party workers injured in the violence. He enquired about their medical condition and spoke with family members, offering reassurance and support.
Speaking to reporters, Debroy described the incident as “deeply shocking” and called for an impartial investigation. He emphasised that the BJP had issued instructions across the state to ensure peaceful elections, noting that polling had otherwise proceeded smoothly in most areas.
“This was a sudden attack, a conspiracy. The police are investigating, and the truth will come out,” Debroy said. He added that one of the injured youths belonged to his constituency, expressing personal grief: “He is a good boy, my own constituency’s son. I was so distressed last night that I couldn’t sleep.”
Debroy assured the family of full support, stating that as their MLA he would take responsibility for providing necessary assistance.
Jitendra Chaudhury’s Visit to Gomati District Hospital
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury visited Gomati District Hospital to meet the injured Tipra Motha candidate and workers. He alleged that 10–12 vehicles carrying outsiders had arrived at the Surma Centre with the intention of influencing polling. According to him, when locals resisted, violence broke out, resulting in a candidate being shot and two others injured.
Chaudhury pointed to videos circulating on social media, claiming they showed BJP supporters attempting to enter polling areas and cast fraudulent votes. He demanded a thorough investigation into these allegations.
He also referred to a confrontation near the strong room, where supporters of different parties allegedly tried to monitor ballot‑box movement. Police personnel were reportedly attacked while intervening.
Despite the violence, Chaudhury praised the determination of voters: “The enthusiasm among people to cast their votes, even after such incidents, shows their strong commitment to democracy.”
The incidents have intensified scrutiny of security arrangements during the TTAADC Village Committee elections, which are being held after a decade. With multiple parties contesting, including BJP, CPI(M), Congress, Tipra Motha, and CPI(ML), the stakes remain high.
Both visits highlight contrasting narratives: while the BJP leadership insists the violence was an external conspiracy, the opposition alleges organised attempts to disrupt polling. The Election Commission and police are now under pressure to investigate swiftly and ensure law and order in the remaining phases of the electoral process.
