Agartala Feb 01: As the assembly election inches closer, scattered incidents of ‘political violence’ are reported almost everyday despite Election Commissions claims of deployment of adequate security forces to combat such situations.
In an alleged action of political revenge, CPI-M supporter Arijit Biswas’s car was set fire by miscreants in Ishan Chandranagar area under Amtali Police Station on late Tuesday night.
The car owner when asked about this said, “The incident is completely an outcome of political revenge as I have been associated with CPIM since student life and is working for the party in this election period”.
Congress candidate from Surjyamani Nagar assembly constituency Sushanta Chakraborty visited the spot and strongly condemned the incident.
Meanwhile, police informed that 3 persons have been arrested in connection with the incident and investigation is underway.
In another similar incident, a CPI-M supporter was beaten up by BJP workers in Majlishpur assembly constituency.
According to details, “On Tuesday late night CPIM worker named Amulya Debnath was returning home from a party rally when he was allegedly kidnapped from Bajnagar area and taken to Bardhaman Thakurpara in a car and brutally beaten up by miscreants”.
“Escaping from the hands of the miscreants who tried to kill me using a machete I remained hidden in a nearby forest entire night and later reached home today morning”, said injured Amulya Debnath.
The victim’s daughter and son-in law later rushed him to GB hospital for treatment.
The injured CPI-M worker however, identified two of the miscreants as Biplab Debnath and Pranab Das, both BJP workers under Majlishpur constituency.
Wednesday, a delegation of CPIM leaders including party’s local committee secretary Chandan Das, party candidate Sanjay Das among others placed deputation to the OC Jirania Police Station and apprised him of the incidents.
The CPIM leaders demanded immediate identification and arrest of the ruling party backed miscreants at the earliest.
Meanwhile, CPI-M candidate Partha Pratim Majumdar was subject to attack at Bishalgarh area on Wednesday as he was campaigning for the party in view of the ensuing elections.
However, police on receiving complaints took immediate action and arrested three BJP workers namely Subhajit Sarkar, Dipu Das and Saurabh Deb.
In this situation, the CPIM State Committee expressed serious concern over rising incidents of violence despite steps taken by the election commission.
