Agartala, Mar 15: Union Minister of State Pratima Bhowmik who fought the assembly polls and secured victory from Dhanpur assembly constituency, tendered her resignation as Member of Tripura Legislative Assembly to Protem Speaker Binoy Bhusan Das on Wednesday.
According to Bhowmik, she tendered the resignation based on the directions from central leadership.
Meanwhile, this is for the first time that any MLA of the state resigned before taking the oath.
Bhowmik had fought the assembly elections from Dhanpur twice earlier in 1998 and 2018 but failed to win. In the 2023 assembly polls, she secured victory and became an MLA with a margin of 3500 votes from the same constituency.
She became the Union Minister of State followed by her victory as and MP Lok-Sabha from West Tripura seat in the parliamentary elections of 2019.
After resigning as MLA, Bhowmik in a social media post wrote that she had resigned as per the direction from the central leadership.
In the meantime, speculations are rife that former Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma may contest the by-election from Dhanpur constituency and return to the ministry.
