Public representatives play a crucial role in bridging the gap between the government’s vision and the aspirations of the people, and remain the pillars of public trust, Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu said on Friday.
He said the foremost responsibility of public representatives is to fulfil their duties towards the people.
The Governor made these remarks after inaugurating a seminar cum workshop titled “Responsibility and Accountability of Public Representatives to All Sections of People”, organized by the Tripura Legislative Assembly at Prajna Bhavan in Agartala.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor stressed that the goal must be to ensure that every citizen receives the rights and justice guaranteed by the Constitution. He highlighted the importance of empowering all sections of society, including farmers, tribal communities, women, and youth.
He further said that public representatives, though elected from specific constituencies, carry the responsibility of serving the entire state and its people. Ensuring that the benefits of development reach the last person in society is one of their most important duties.
Expressing pride that Tripura has been declared a fully literate state, the Governor called for building a strong ecosystem for quality education. He also highlighted the state’s progress in women’s empowerment, noting that many women have become financially independent under initiatives such as the ‘Lakhpati Didi’ scheme, and over one lakh women have emerged as entrepreneurs.
The Governor pointed out that nearly 70 percent of the state’s population depends on agriculture and said public representatives must ensure farmers receive benefits under schemes such as PM-Kisan and the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana.
Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh said at the programme that the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), established in 1911, is an international organisation working to strengthen parliamentary democracy, good governance, and the rule of law.
He said its primary objective is to enhance the capacity of public representatives and reinforce democracy through transparent governance. One of the key aims of the CPA is to build capacity through regional cooperation, making the present initiative highly relevant. He added that such efforts are crucial for ensuring real development and improving the quality of life of the people.
He noted that Tripura has developed a rich and composite culture through the harmonious coexistence of 19 tribal communities. With its natural resources, traditional heritage, and progress in uplifting marginalised sections, Tripura has emerged as a significant example of development in the country.
He said that since the formation of the government at the Centre in 2014 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, development in the Northeast, including Tripura, has gained remarkable momentum. He added that initiatives such as the Act East Policy and the effort to project the eight northeastern states as ‘Ashtalakshmi’ have positively impacted the region.
The Deputy Chairman also highlighted the glorious history of Tripura’s royal lineage, particularly the Manikya dynasty, and called upon public representatives to work collectively for the progress of the state while standing beside people from all sections of society.
Addressing the programme virtually, West Tripura Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb emphasised that accountability and responsibility of public representatives are vital for strengthening democracy. He said public representatives must earn the trust of the people and noted that the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association has been playing an important role in reinforcing parliamentary democracy.
Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma, MP Kriti Devi Singh Debbarma, MP Parimal Suklabaidya, Chief Whip Kalyani Saha Roy, and MLA Gopal Chandra Roy also addressed the gathering. A message from Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury was read out by MLA Sudip Sarkar. The vote of thanks was delivered by Acting Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly Ramprasad Paul.
Among others present on the dais were Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath, Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder, and Assembly Secretary Amiya Kumar Nath. Besides Cabinet ministers, the event was attended by Zilla Sabhadhipatis, the Chief Executive Member and members of the TTAADC, municipal corporators, and public representatives from the panchayat and block levels.
