The three-month nationwide Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign aimed at preventing cervical cancer was launched in Tripura on Saturday as a part of the national campaign launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Ajmer.Â
The state-level programme was formally launched at IGM Hospital. Officials said the campaign, which began on February 28, will continue for three months and aims to immunise around 17,500 adolescent girls across the state.
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee attended the vaccination drive at IGM hospital. Speaking to the media persons, Bhattacharjee thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his consistent efforts to bring visible changes in the health sector.Â
“As we all know this vaccine has been developed by the ICMR to prevent cervical cancer. It has been launched nationally for the welfare of the people. I extend my sincere thanks to the Prime Minister for his efforts to streamline the entire health sector. This year’s budget has also reflected how the centre is trying to consider the health sector as its priority,” the senior BJP leader said.Â
Describing it as a step forward towards realizing the goal for Viksit Bharat, the MP said, “In every aspect of public health, enough work is being carried out for the people.”Â
The HPV vaccine is being administered free of cost to girls aged 14 years who have not yet turned 15. Health department officials said the initiative seeks to curb the rising incidence of cervical cancer, which is primarily caused by persistent infection with the Human Papillomavirus.
According to global health estimates, India records a significant number of new cervical cancer cases and related deaths every year. Medical experts maintain that timely vaccination substantially reduces the risk of developing the disease later in life. They also emphasised that vaccination, coupled with regular screening and public awareness, is critical for effective prevention.
The vaccine will be available at all routine immunisation sessions conducted at Agartala Government Medical College and GB Hospital, IGM Hospital, Tripura Medical College, as well as primary health centres, community health centres, sub-divisional and district hospitals.
Officials said vaccination data will be recorded on the Centre’s U-WIN digital platform to ensure real-time monitoring of beneficiaries under the universal immunisation programme.
Several senior health department officials and public representatives attended the launch programme.
