A park developed under the Smart City project at Battala in the capital, reportedly at a cost of crores of rupees, is facing allegations of poor maintenance, waste accumulation and suspected drug use.
The park was developed with the objective of providing residents with a clean, attractive and safe public space. However, the present condition of the area appears to be a matter of concern for local residents.
Located beside the busy Battala fish market, the park and its surroundings are reportedly littered with fish-market waste, fish remains, discarded crates and other garbage. The accumulation of waste along the park wall has allegedly resulted in foul odour and an unhygienic environment, causing inconvenience to pedestrians and visitors.
The condition inside the park has also come under scrutiny. Garbage and discarded liquor bottles have reportedly been found at different spots within the premises.
Local allegations further suggest that groups involved in substance use gather inside the park, particularly after evening hours. This has reportedly created a sense of discomfort and insecurity among people who wish to visit the park, especially families.
A major concern is the management of waste generated by the nearby fish market. Despite municipal waste collection vehicles reportedly being present in the area, residents allege that fish-market waste continues to be dumped along the roadside and beside the park boundary.
The combination of accumulated waste, foul odour and poor sanitation has reportedly affected the overall environment around the Smart City park.
The situation has also raised questions about the role of the Agartala Municipal Corporation, police and authorities responsible for the maintenance and security of the Smart City infrastructure.
Residents are questioning whether the creation of the park alone is sufficient, or whether regular cleaning, proper waste management, security and maintenance should also be ensured to make the facility genuinely useful to the public.
