Storm in Tripura Assembly over alleged disappearance of DGP Suicide Note

The final sitting of the ongoing Tripura Legislative Assembly session turned turbulent on Monday as Opposition legislators raised sharp allegations regarding the reported disappearance of a suicide note allegedly left behind by former state DGP Anurag Dhankar.

The uproar began just before Question Hour, when senior Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman brought the matter to the floor. He claimed that Dhankar’s wife, who arrived in Tripura on Sunday, had sought access to the note and maintained that she possessed a photograph of it. Barman alleged that the original document had since been removed and concealed, sparking immediate tension in the House.

Speaker Rampada Jamatia intervened, ruling that the issue could not be raised in the manner attempted by the Congress legislator. He reminded members that Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha had already made statements on the matter twice during the session. Urging Barman to avoid creating confusion, the Speaker asked him to take his seat and allow proceedings to continue under Assembly rules.

The Speaker’s ruling triggered protests from Congress and CPI(M) MLAs, who moved into the well of the House carrying placards and shouting slogans. The Opposition demanded clarity on the alleged disappearance of the suicide note, further disrupting proceedings.

As the standoff escalated, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath appealed to the Speaker to allow Question Hour to proceed, suggesting that the Opposition be permitted to raise the matter separately after scheduled business. Following his intervention, the protesting MLAs withdrew from the well and returned to their seats, enabling the House to resume its agenda.

The episode added a fresh layer of controversy to the ongoing debate surrounding the death of the former DGP. While the government insists that the matter has already been addressed, the Opposition continues to press for transparency and accountability over the handling of the alleged suicide note.
