Adding yet another feather of success to the cap of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Center, a 32-years old patient suffering from cancerous skull was operated upon at the hospital with success. The operation was performed at the OT of AGMC’s Neurosurgical department. The eight hours long complex operation was jointly performed by a team of doctors from the cancer hospital and AGMC.
Earlier for such treatments people had no other options but to leave the state for advanced treatment. The team of doctors who led the operation consisted of Dr. Siddha Reddy, Dr. Ashish Kumar Gupta, Dr. Mrinal Devavarma et al.
Speaking on the issue, Medial Super of ABV-RC Dr. Gautam Majumder said the operation was critical because the large tumor developed over the scalp and even expanded in some parts of the bones of the skull.
“Surgical Oncology team ABV RCC and Neurosurgery team of GB Hospital removed the diseased portion of scalp along with underlying skull bone. After the operation, the skull is reconstructed with a special mesh of titanium metal in the empty space of the cancerous skull. The skin on the top of the skull had to be replaced”, Dr Majumder said.
