Surya Ghar Muft Bijli: 15,730 registrations done in Tripura

Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, 15,730 registrations have been done in Tripura so far, according to official sources.

Out of these, 591 installations have been completed, and 516 beneficiaries have already received government subsidies. Notably, 117 consumers have successfully reduced their power bills to zero this month and collectively earned Rs. 43,545 by selling excess electricity—money that has already been credited to their accounts, an official press release said.

According to TSECL, Tripura has achieved a remarkable milestone in its power sector by reaching a solar energy production capacity of 2 megawatts, marking a significant leap toward energy self-reliance. This achievement underscores the state's commitment to renewable energy and its vision for a sustainable future.

The breakthrough comes as part of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024. The central scheme aims to install rooftop solar panels on homes across the country, enabling households to generate their own electricity, reduce electricity bills to zero, and even earn income by selling surplus power to the grid, the press release said.

Under the scheme, each beneficiary can receive up to Rs. 85,800 in government subsidies. A solar plant with just 1 KW capacity can generate approximately 100 units of electricity per month, which is enough to meet the monthly needs of an average household. Any surplus power can be added to the grid, providing an additional income stream.

The Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has an ambitious target to scale up solar power generation to 50 megawatts within the next year, potentially transforming Tripura into a self-sufficient power state.
