Students, teachers and staff members of Tilabari Model English Medium SB School on Saturday bid an emotional farewell to headmaster of the school Narayan Sarkar.
Students, parents and members of the school management committee were also present at the programme.
Sarkar served at the school for 18 years and retired from service on Saturday. The institution, located in Tilabari village, has around 70 students from Classes I to VIII and was functioning with three teachers, including the headmaster. Following his retirement, only two teachers will remain.
The farewell meeting was presided over by school management committee member Aichak Rai Noatia. Students and several guardians were present at the event.
Addressing the gathering, Sarkar said he had spent most of his time at the school despite his residence being far away.
“Except on Sundays and government holidays, I remained here and tried to reach school on time every day. I always made efforts to shape the students into responsible individuals,” he said.
He added that he used to contact guardians whenever a student was absent and would continue to keep track of the school’s progress even after retirement.
Speaking at the programme, Noatia said the school had been facing a shortage of teachers but Sarkar’s dedication ensured that studies do not get hampered due to the shortage of teachers. Â
“We did not feel the shortage because of his commitment. He carried the responsibility almost single-handedly,” he said.
Noatia said the management committee would approach the education department authorities to fill the vacant post and appoint at least two additional teachers to ensure smooth functioning of the school.
