Agartala, Feb 07: Strong security measures have been put in place to ensure violence-free elections, Chief Electoral Officer of Tripura- Kiran Gitte said on Tuesday.
Addressing a press conference, the CEO said, the Election Commission is committed to ensure zero poll violence. He said, immediate action is taken whenever any incident takes place.
The Election Commission planned a three-tier security arrangement for the elections scheduled on February 16 next.
All 3337 booths would have deployment of Central Armed Paramilitary Forces while the security personnel would be deployed in double strength in the polling stations where more than 30 minutes is required to reach, the CEO mentioned.
Besides, the bordering and sensitive polling stations would also have deployment of security forces in double strength. Along with the candidates, security would also be ensured for the polling agents, he added.
He also said, over 250 Naka points are there in the state and all these are functioning 24x7.
The CEO said, in view of the assembly elections, the law and order situation in the state has been monitored since August last year. He said, arrest warrants have been issued against a total of 1,610 persons under non-bailable sections during this period.
He also said, the Election Commission sought cooperation from the Border Security Force (BSF) so that the voters residing on the other side of the border fencing could cast their votes. A list of 134 such voters has been handed over to BSF.
Speaking to the media, State Police Nodal Officer and IG Crime of Tripura Police- G.K. Rao said, 62 incidents were registered and 54 persons were arrested since announcement of the elections till February 5 last. He also said, notices were issued against 214 persons during this period.
