For the first time, a grand knockout tennis cricket tournament titled the Sudhanka Das Memorial began on Saturday at the Bhagat Singh Mini Stadium premises at Dashamighat in the Teliamura subdivision. The tournament is being organized by the New Star Club of Teliamura.
The opening match of the tournament was formally inaugurated by the State Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Tinku Roy. He was accompanied by the Chief Whip of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Kalyani Saha Roy.
Among others present at the event were Teliamura Municipal Council Chairman Rupak Sarkar, Vice-Chairman Madhusudan Roy, Secretary of the Teliamura Cricket Association Nandan Roy, Sanchita Das—the daughter of late Ranji Trophy player Sudhanka Das—local councillor Malashree Saha Pal, New Star Club Secretary Suman Ghosh, and several other distinguished personalities.
On the opening day, two strong teams—Bhagat Singh Warriors and Rising Star—faced each other in the inaugural match. From the very start, a festive atmosphere prevailed across the stadium, with the galleries filled with enthusiastic spectators.
Addressing the gathering, Sports Minister Tinku Roy expressed hope that such memorial cricket tournaments would foster discipline and greater interest in sports among the younger generation.
In her address, MLA Kalyani Saha Roy highly praised the initiative of the New Star Club and called for organizing such tournaments on an even larger scale in the future. Â
Late Sudhanka Das represented the state team in the Ranji Trophy for the first time from Teliamura in 1986. In later years, he worked tirelessly to promote and develop cricket in Teliamura. Under his guidance, many talented cricketers from Teliamura have gone on to earn recognition at the state and national levels.
To preserve his legacy, the New Star Club of Teliamura, with the support of the Teliamura Sub-Divisional Cricket Association, has launched the Sudhanka Das Memorial Knockout Cricket Tournament. A total of 22 teams are participating in the tournament.
