Leaders of the ruling Tipra Motha party’s minority cell allegedly violated prohibitory orders imposed under Section 163 of BNSS in Tripura’s Unakoti district by entering the violence-hit Shimultala-Syadapara area in Fatikroy, prompting the police to warn of strict legal action against them.
Prohibitory orders were clamped at Sayderpara village in Fatikroy following a recent clash between two groups. The administration had banned gatherings and visits to the area and deployed security personnel to maintain law and order.
Despite the restrictions in force, a group of Tipra Motha minority cell leaders, led by its chairman Shah Alam Mia, entered the area on Friday and visited affected families.
After inspecting the site, the leaders went to Fatikroy police station and met police officials. Speaking to reporters later, Shah Alam alleged vandalism of religious places, houses and vehicles belonging to members of the minority community, along with incidents of arson and looting.
He also claimed that some of the affected persons were being arrested and urged the Chief Minister to intervene and extend support to the families impacted by the violence.
The incident has triggered political reactions, with opposition parties questioning the administration’s role and alleging selective enforcement of restrictions.
Opposition leaders reiterated their claim that while their workers were prevented from entering the area, ruling party leaders were allowed to move freely.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Kumarghat) Utpalendu Debnath said, “Section 163 had been imposed immediately after the clash and security forces were deployed in the area. So far, 13 persons have been arrested in connection with the incident. No political leaders have been granted permission to visit the area,” he said.
Debnath said police came to know that six to seven leaders of a political party had entered the area where the prohibitory orders were still in force. “Strict legal action is being initiated against those who violated the prohibitory orders,” he said, adding that the situation in the area was currently under control.
Police are also examining whether there was any lapse in enforcement of security at the entry points to the prohibited area, officials said.
