Tourist footfall drops at Neermahal despite improved facilities

Neermahal, one of the key tourist destinations in Tripura, saw a sharp decline in tourist arrival on the first day of New Year, compared to the previous year.

Every year, especially from November onwards, tourist inflow increases significantly, peaking in December. However, this season has reportedly witnessed a notable decline in tourist footfall.

Sources said, on January 1, last year, boat fare collections amounted to around Rs. 2.58 lakh. In contrast, on January 1, this year, collections dropped to approximately Rs. 1.26 lakh—less than half of the previous year. Tourist arrivals in December, 2025 were also considerably lower.

Neermahal, located at Melaghar in Sepahijala district, are among the most prominent tourist attractions of the state and India. Tourists from across Tripura, other states and even abroad visit the scenic site throughout the year to enjoy its natural beauty.

Rudrasagar is one of India’s largest natural lakes, and on its north-western side stands Neermahal, a historic palace built by the last king of Tripura, Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya.

This decline comes despite major promotional efforts, including the grand ‘United Promo Fest’. While the event was held for one day in 2025, it was extended to two days in December 2026. Infrastructure has also been improved, with cleaner surroundings, picnic-friendly zones, ample parking, and NDRF volunteers stationed daily at key points for safety.

Despite these measures, tourist turnout remains low, raising questions about the underlying reasons behind the decline.
