In a dramatic development, Tripura police have detained a Maruti Suzuki Boleno (TR03M0775) linked to Wednesday’s shocking assault on a traffic assistant sub‑inspector.Â
Â
The car was seized after investigators tracked it down using CCTV footage, but the driver who dragged the officer on the bonnet remains absconding.
Â
The incident, which saw ASI Biplab Datta clinging to the bonnet from Battala to the steel bridge over the Howrah river embankment, has rattled the force and sparked outrage over the safety of frontline law enforcers.
Â
On Thursday morning, IG (Law and Order) Monchak Ippar visited the West Agartala police station to review the case. He directed officers to intensify the manhunt, instructing them to obtain ownership details from the transport department and identify the driver through the registered owner.Â
Â
“This is a heinous crime and can be treated as an attempt to murder. Once the culprit is arrested, relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) will be invoked,” he told reporters, assuring swift action based on the FIR filed by ASI Datta.
Â
Although the seizure of the vehicle marks a crucial step in the investigation, but the absence of the driver has kept tensions high.
