Traffic violations bring Rs 52 Crore in fines over three years, Tripura CM tells Assembly

Tripura has collected more than Rs 52 crore in fines over the past three financial years for traffic law violations, Chief Minister and Home Minister Dr. Manik Saha informed the Legislative Assembly on Monday.

Replying to an unstarred question from MLA Nayan Sarkar, Dr. Saha said fines worth Rs 16.23 crore were collected in 2023–24, rising to Rs 17.79 crore in 2024–25, and further to Rs 18.02 crore in 2025–26. The figures underline a steady increase in enforcement and revenue from traffic penalties.

In response to a separate query from MLA Shailendra Chandra Nath, the Chief Minister provided detailed statistics on specific violations. During 2025–26, authorities filed 1,276 prosecution reports (PRs) for drunk driving, collecting Rs 12.90 lakh in fines. For overloading, 4,547 PRs were filed, yielding Rs 1.29 crore, while 2,700 PRs for over speeding brought in Rs 1.15 crore. The largest category was “other traffic violations,” with 63,592 PRs and 41,637 e-challans, generating Rs 16.29 crore.

The crackdown continued into 2026–27. Up to July 31, 398 PRs for drunk driving collected Rs 4.86 lakh, 1,701 PRs for overloading yielded Rs 44.08 lakh, and 791 PRs for over speeding brought in Rs 31.18 lakh. Other violations accounted for 23,965 PRs and 10,010 e-challans, resulting in Rs 5.18 crore in fines.

Altogether, fines collected during 2025–26 and up to July 31, 2026 amounted to Rs 24.85 crore, according to official records.

Dr. Saha stressed that enforcement is being carried out through both traditional prosecution reports and the e-challan system, ensuring accountability and compliance. He noted that traffic safety campaigns and strict monitoring are part of the Home Department’s ongoing efforts to reduce accidents and improve road discipline.
