Churaibari Dec 14: In a tragic accident that unfolded on early Saturday morning, a police constable was crushed to death by a lorry at the Churaibari police gate under Bazaricherra police station.

As per reports, the incident occurred when a lorry, numbered TR01AU-1672 from Tripura, carrying empty cartoons, entered the Assam police gate.

On-duty police officer Ujjwal Borah (25), signalled the vehicle to stop. The driver, however, sped away, hitting Borah at high speed. The impact left Borah in a severely injured state on the national highway.

Despite the immediate efforts of fellow police personnel to rush him to Makunda Hospital, Borah's condition deteriorated, and he was being taken to Silchar when he succumbed to his injuries en- route. His body is currently at the Karimganj Civil Hospital morgue for an autopsy and will be handed over to his family after state honours.

Officer Borah had joined the Assam Police in 2022, with his first posting in Karimganj district. His untimely death comes just a few months after his assignment to the Churaibari outpost. Hailing from Jorhat district, his family members are left devastated by the loss.

In a related development, the police launched an intensive search for the runaway lorry and its driver. They located and apprehended the vehicle and the driver in the Ratabari police station area. Unfortunately, while trying to apprehend the runaway lorry, Ratabari Police Station OC Bimal Chhetri was also seriously injured.

The arrested individuals, driver Gias Uddin and co-driver Abhijit Shabdkar, were found with twenty thousand Yaba tablets, hidden in the vehicle. They have been taken into custody as part of the investigation.
