Tribal Welfare Minister pushes Tripura Textiles toward Global Stage

State Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma on Monday set the tone for Tripura’s textile sector to reach international markets, inaugurating the district-level consultative programme “Textiles for Global Markets” at the Panchayat Raj Training Institute in Ambassa, Dhalai.

Debbarma, who lit the ceremonial lamp to open the event, underscored that Tripura’s handloom, handicrafts, bamboo, cane and sericulture products represent both cultural heritage and untapped economic potential.

He urged artisans, self-help groups, and entrepreneurs to embrace modern technology, skill enhancement, and quality control to ensure that local craftsmanship can compete globally.

“This is not just about tradition; it is about transforming heritage into opportunity. With collective effort, Tripura’s artisans can secure a place on the world stage while strengthening rural livelihoods,” Debbarma said in his address.

The programme organized by the Department of Handlooms, Handicrafts & Sericulture, Government of Tripura, is part of India’s larger vision to achieve US$100 billion in textile exports by 2030.

The consultative meet brought together key dignitaries including Susmita Das, Sabhadhipati of Dhalai Zilla Parishad; Pratima Malakar, Chairperson of Ambassa Municipal Council; Ajit Shukla Das, Director of the Department; and Van Lal Dika Darlong, Additional District Magistrate of Dhalai. Discussions centered on product innovation, export readiness, and strategies to align traditional industries with global demand.

Officials emphasized that the initiative will not only boost exports but also empower local communities by creating sustainable livelihoods and strengthening the rural economy.

The programme concluded with a call for artisans to modernize practices while preserving Tripura’s textile identity, ensuring that the state’s heritage evolves into a globally recognized brand.
