Tripura Agriculture Minister inaugurates Betchara Rural Market; Pledges stronger support for farmers

A new chapter in Tripura’s rural economy unfolded on Monday as State Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath inaugurated the Betchara Rural Market under Kumarghat subdivision of Unakoti district. 

Declaring the facility open to farmers, traders and local residents, the minister said the Rs 2.20 crore project would serve as a vital platform for ensuring fair prices for agricultural produce while boosting commerce and strengthening the grassroots economy.

Speaking at the event, Nath emphasized that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to modernizing rural markets and empowering farming communities. He noted that since the formation of the BJP‑led government in 2018, the state has accelerated efforts to upgrade agricultural infrastructure. Between 2018–19 and 2025–26, a total of 204 rural markets are being developed with an allocation of Rs 461.83 crore, underscoring the scale of investment in rural transformation.

The minister assured that the government’s focus on farmer welfare and rural development will continue in the coming years. “Every step we take to strengthen agricultural markets is an investment in the prosperity of our villages and the dignity of our farmers,” Nath remarked, adding that the Betchara market would not only benefit cultivators but also create opportunities for small traders and entrepreneurs in the region.

Local residents welcomed the inauguration, expressing hope that the new facility would reduce dependence on middlemen, improve market access, and provide a more organized space for trade. The market is expected to become a hub for agricultural exchange, cultural interaction and rural enterprise, reflecting the government’s vision of inclusive development.
