Agartala, Feb 17: The Assembly elections in Tripura passed off peacefully on Thursday with 87.63 per cent turnout (excluding postal ballots), according to a latest report.
The report said, of the total 28,14,584 enrolled electors, 24,66,511 people had cast their votes—the turnout was 87.63 per cent.
The voting percentage was 81.1 per cent till 4 pm and the process had continued in many polling stations after 4 pm with around nine per cent voters in the queue. The turnout was recorded 32.12 per cent at 11 am, 51.42 per cent at 1 pm and 69.96 per cent at 3 pm. The people came out in large numbers and participated in voting in a festive mood since the morning.
Speaking to the media, Chief Electoral Officer of Tripura- Kiran Gitte on Thursday night had expressed hope that the final turnout would touch 92 percent (including postal ballots).
The CEO said that the assembly election held on Thursday was participative. The voting was peaceful except for some stray incidents, he told reporters, adding that immediate actions were taken wherever any incident was reported. Meanwhile, technical glitches in voting machines were reported from some places which were fixed immediately.
Gitte congratulated the voters, election staff, security personnel and polling agents for the free, fair and transparent election. An appeal was made for ensuring violence-free elections and the people had responded to the appeal to a great extent, he added.
State Police Nodal Officer G.S. Rao, who also attended the press conference, said there were six complaints regarding poll violence and six persons were arrested.
Apart from this, there were some other minor incidents which included 6 complaints of disturbance in EVM functioning, 8 cases of obstruction of political supporters and three cases of obstruction of polling agents. Rao said the final report would be available by Friday morning.
Total 259 candidates including 30 women contested the polls in the sixty seats of Tripura.
