Tripura CM informs Assembly: 204 Km of roads upgraded, new Flyover projects and Highway plans underway

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha informed the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Monday that 204.45 kilometres of state roads have already been converted to double-lane standards, while the remaining highways will be taken up for widening in the next phase, depending on land availability and financial resources.

The announcement came in response to a question from BJP MLA Tafajjal Hossain, who pressed for faster upgrades and suggested an alternative alignment for the Bishramganj–Melaghar–Sonamura–Belonia highway. 

He argued that routing the road through Bishalgarh, Boxanagar and Sonamura could benefit three constituencies while reducing flood risks along the Gomati river embankment. 

Dr. Saha confirmed that routes involving Bishalgarh, Boxanagar and Amtali–Sabroom are already under consideration for full double-lane development, subject to funds.

The session also saw CPI(M) MLA Dipankar Sen propose extending the flyover network and exploring metro connectivity to Udaipur, Teliamura and the airport. 

In reply, the Chief Minister clarified that no plan exists to extend the airport flyover towards Amtali. Instead, a new 3.985-km double-lane flyover has been proposed from Fire Brigade Chowmuhani through CAD Chowmuhani, Shankar Chowmuhani and Durga Chowmuhani, over Katartal up to Radhanagar Bus Stand, with connectivity towards Battala. Feasibility studies, layout plans and land acquisition planning have already begun, and the project will move forward once Finance Department approval is secured.

Dr. Saha recalled an earlier proposal for a 2.905-km flyover from IGM Chowmuhani to Circuit House, estimated at ₹593.33 crore, but said difficulties due to existing buildings prompted exploration of an alternative alignment. ₹65 crore had already been sanctioned for land acquisition.

Tipra Motha MLA Sanjay Tripura demanded double-laning of the Karbook–Shantirbazar and Tirthamukh–Gandacherra shortcut routes. The Chief Minister responded that the Shantirbazar (NH-08) to NH-208 route has been proposed to the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for funding. Other MLAs sought updates on the Ambassa–Gandacherra, Gandacherra–Amarpur via Thalchara, and Champaknagar–Udaipur via Jampuijala roads.

Dr. Saha stressed that road widening cannot be undertaken merely on demand but must follow IRC standards based on traffic volume measured in Passenger Car Units (PCU). He assured the House that the government will continue to consider road widening and flyover projects based on technical feasibility, traffic needs, land availability and funding.
