Agartala, Aug 05: Tripura government is keen to connect the state with Puri by a train, said Transport minister Pranajit Singha Roy.
The Transport minister, who flagged-off Agartala- Deoghar special train from Agartala railway station on Friday evening, also said the Tripura government already placed proposals before the Ministry of Railways for running trains from Agartala to Mumbai and Jammu and Kashmir.
Besides, he said, the state government also proposed an express train from Agartala to Guwahati.
Speaking to the media, he said, nine express trains along with DEMU/ local trains are running from Agartala at present.
“The state government is also trying for a train between Agartala and Puri,” the Transport minister said.
He said, former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb had taken the initiative for the Agartala- Deoghar train for the convenience of over 14 lakhs Satsangis in Tripura. The train service was disrupted following the Covid pandemic for a considerable period and then due to natural disaster.
He said, to meet the demand of the Satsangis, the Transport department of Tripura wrote a letter to the Minister of Railways to restore the Agartala- Deoghar train service. Besides, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha took up the matter with Centre and arranged the special train.
The Agartala- Deoghar special train departed from Agartala railway station at 7 pm with around 2200 passengers on board, the transport minister said, adding that another train would leave for Deoghar at 3 pm on Saturday.
He also said, the Agartala- Deoghar train would run weekly on every Saturday (7 pm) now onwards.
