Tripura govt to bear medical expenses of Gurugram assault survivor

The Tripura government will bear all medical expenses of the 19-year-old female from the state who was allegedly confined and assaulted in Gurugram, Chief Minister Manik Saha said.

In a social media post, the chief minister said it has been decided that the entire cost of treatment of the survivor will be borne by the state government.

Tripura Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy said he met the survivor and her parents at a hospital in Delhi earlier this week and also spoke to police officials in Haryana and Delhi regarding the case.

Addressing reporters, Roy said the accused has already been arrested and expressed confidence that the law would take its course. “The police will do its duty and the accused shall be punished as per law,” he said.

The minister also urged students from the state who travel outside for higher studies to remain cautious. He said parents should remain vigilant about their children living away from home.

According to police and the victim’s family, the woman, a resident of Sepahijala district, met the accused, identified as 19-year-old Shivam from Delhi’s Narela area, through an online platform. She later went to live with him in Gurugram.

Police sources said the survivor was allegedly confined and assaulted repeatedly over a three-day period in mid-February. On February 16, she reportedly made a distress call to her mother, saying she feared for her life, following which the matter was reported to Gurugram Police.

The chief minister also spoke to Nayab Singh Saini, who assured that necessary steps would be taken to ensure justice in the case, officials said.
