Tripura hosts first grand National Organ Donation Day; Sets roadmap for advanced transplant services

Tripura stepped into a new era of healthcare awareness on Monday as the state observed National Organ Donation Day 2026 with unprecedented scale and participation. The landmark programme, themed “Angdaan – Jeevan Sanjeevani Abhiyan”, was hosted at Pragna Bhavan in Agartala and marked the beginning of a comprehensive roadmap to expand organ transplantation services in the state.

Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, who led the event, described the initiative as a turning point for Tripura’s medical sector. He stressed that organ donation awareness must reach every household, every village, and every community, so that the culture of giving life through donation becomes deeply rooted in society. 

While Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha could not attend due to official engagements outside the state, his message of encouragement was conveyed, urging the campaign to be carried forward with full energy and commitment.

The programme showcased Tripura’s partnership with the Mohan Foundation, a national leader in organ donation advocacy. Through this collaboration, doctors and paramedical staff in the state are being trained to handle complex transplantation procedures, while hospital systems are being strengthened to build a reliable organ donation network. Teams of medical professionals are also being sent outside the state for advanced training, ensuring Tripura keeps pace with national standards.

Gitte announced that Tripura’s vision goes beyond kidney transplants, with plans to introduce liver and heart transplantation in the coming years. He highlighted recent progress in eye donation, noting that the state has already performed corneal transplants and operates an eye bank at IGM Hospital, which will soon be shifted to GB Hospital to improve services. Addressing the challenge of corneal blindness, he said strengthening eye donation and corneal transplantation will bring hope to patients suffering from vision impairment.

The roadmap also includes introducing bone marrow transplantation facilities at the state’s cancer hospital, a move that would significantly expand access to advanced treatment for critical patients. “Every step in organ donation and transplantation is not just about saving lives today—it is about building a healthier, more resilient Tripura for tomorrow,” Gitte remarked.

The grand observance of National Organ Donation Day has been hailed as a milestone, reflecting the state’s determination to combine awareness with infrastructure, and compassion with science.
