A dramatic jailbreak in North Tripura’s Kalikapur prison on Wednesday morning during Maha Navami has sent shockwaves across the state.Â
Â
Six convicted criminals escaped after launching a violent attack on prison staff and breaking the main gate lock. One jail official, Gedu Mia, was critically injured and is currently undergoing treatment at Dharmanagar District Hospital.
Â
In a swift response, Dharmanagar police and Border Security Force (BSF) personnel managed to apprehend two of the fugitives. Narayan Chandra Dutta, a Bangladeshi national from Feni, was caught while attempting to cross the border through Malakar Basti with help from locals and BSF personnel.Â
Â
Earlier, another escapee, Abdul Fatta from Nilam Bazar in Assam’s Sribhumi district, was intercepted by Dharmanagar police while trying to flee via West Chandrapur.
Â
The remaining four fugitives — notorious dacoit Nazim Uddin, Rahim Ali, Sunil Debbarma(awarded life term imprisonment), and Rozan Ali — are still on the run. Police have launched an extensive manhunt and deployed teams across the region to track them down.
Â
Authorities have also detained an alleged accomplice suspected of aiding the escape and are conducting intensive interrogation. The incident has raised serious concerns about prison security and coordination among law enforcement agencies.
Â
Tripura remains on high alert as efforts continue to recapture the remaining fugitives and restore public confidence.
