Tripura: Manu River swells, Families displaced; Flood alert in Khowai

Relentless monsoon rains have plunged parts of Tripura into crisis, with the Manu and Khowai rivers swelling dangerously and triggering widespread displacement and fears of fresh flooding.

A full day of heavy downpour turned the Manu River into a raging torrent, inundating Ghattagachh Para in Manu Ghat. 

Waist-deep water entered homes, forcing nearly 36 families to abandon their dwellings. District authorities acted swiftly, relocating affected residents to nearby schools, Anganwadi centres, and Manu Town Hall. 

Local MDC Hollywood Chakma, accompanied by Sub-Divisional Magistrate Subrata Das and senior officials, visited the site and assured victims of continued support. 

Relief and rescue operations remain in full swing, though persistent rainfall has heightened fears of further inundation.

Meanwhile in Khowai district, flood conditions are gradually emerging as the Khowai River’s water level inches close to the danger mark. 

With the Kalyanpur Block Development Officer away on training, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Apurba Krishna Chakraborty is overseeing the situation. Deputy Collector Sandip Debbarma has mobilised teams with boats, cutting machines, lighting equipment, and other emergency gear. Scouts under Abhijit Acharya are coordinating with officials to assist in rescue efforts.

Kuchpara has been identified as the most vulnerable locality, with its junior basic school prepared as a shelter. Additional safe houses have been readied in Dwarikapur, Dighirpara, Saranjoy_Choudhury Para, Ghiltali, Manipuri_Basti, Satyaguru_Para, Morgang_Para and at the Kalyanpur Ram Thakur Ashram. Volunteers are on standby to assist with evacuation if required.

Floodwaters have inundated large tracts of farmland, raising concerns among farmers. Seedbeds of Aman paddy and newly transplanted fields are at risk. 

Kalyanpur Panchayat Samiti Chairman Somen Ghosh and Agriculture Supervisor Debraj Barman inspected affected areas, gathering preliminary data on crop losses.

Authorities continue to monitor river levels closely, urging residents to remain vigilant. Relief teams are prepared to act immediately should water levels rise further. 

Officials stressed that while rainfall has eased slightly since noon, heavy showers upstream could still worsen the situation.
