Tripura minister pitches water security priorities at national summit

Tripura has called for stronger and more sustainable water management as the state showcased its priorities and experiences at a high-level national summit in New Delhi.

Panchayat Minister Kishor Barman represented Tripura at the two-day Departmental Summit on Water, convened by the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti at Sushma Swaraj Bhavan. Rural Development Secretary Abhishek Singh also participated in the deliberations on behalf of the state.

The summit, chaired by Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil, brought together ministers, secretaries and senior officials from the Centre and states to discuss emerging challenges and strategies in the water sector, Barman shared on social media. 

During the discussions, participants focused on strengthening water conservation measures, sustainable utilisation of water resources, improving access to safe drinking water, restoring traditional and existing water sources and accelerating the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission.

Barman highlighted Tripura’s initiatives and experiences in water management, while also outlining challenges faced by the state. The discussions provided an opportunity for Tripura to learn from successful practices adopted elsewhere and examine their potential application in the state.

The minister said the deliberations would help strengthen efforts towards ensuring a reliable and sustainable supply of safe drinking water across Tripura.

“Water is life, and its conservation and protection is a collective responsibility,” Barman said.
He said Tripura would continue working in accordance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Har Ghar Jal’ vision, with the broader objective of building a water-secure and developed India.
