Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha has confirmed that preliminary discussions have taken place between officials of Tripura and Mizoram to address the long-standing inter-state border dispute. Speaking to the press, Dr. Saha expressed optimism that dialogue would pave the way for a peaceful resolution to the decades-old issue.
The Chief Minister revealed that he had earlier spoken directly with Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, proposing that both states sit together to find a solution through dialogue. Lalduhoma reportedly agreed to the proposal and expressed willingness to come to Agartala for talks. However, before a chief ministerial-level meeting, it was decided that officials from both states would first hold preliminary discussions.
Dr. Saha stated, “I was informed yesterday that Mizoram officials had come and discussions were held. I have only been told that talks took place.” He clarified that he has not yet received a detailed report on the subjects discussed or the decisions taken, and will comment further once the full report reaches him.
Despite the lack of specifics, the Chief Minister reiterated his belief that the border problem can only be solved through dialogue and mutual understanding. He expressed confidence that a solution will emerge, saying, “There will definitely be a resolution.”
The Tripura–Mizoram border has been a source of tension for years, with disputes over demarcation and administrative control affecting local communities. The initiation of official-level talks is being seen as a significant step forward, laying the groundwork for a possible chief ministerial-level meeting in the near future.
Observers note that the move reflects a broader effort to strengthen cooperation and maintain peace in the Northeast, where inter-state border disputes have often disrupted harmony. The expectation now is that the ongoing process will lead to a mutually acceptable settlement, ensuring security and stability for border residents.
