Tripura mourns passing of veteran teacher & cultural luminary Manik Lal Datta

Bordowali bid farewell on Saturday to one of its most respected educators and cultural figures, Manik Lal Datta, who passed away at the age of 78 following heart failure while undergoing treatment at ILS Hospital. His death has cast a pall of grief across the community, where he was cherished as a teacher, mentor, and cultural activist.

Datta’s mortal remains were taken on a solemn journey through places that defined his life — the Tripura Cricket Association office, where he was a life member; Bordowali Higher Secondary School, where he taught for over three decades; and his ancestral home in Milan Sangha. The cortege later moved to Mouchak Club, where he had served as president, before the final rites at Battala crematorium.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha personally visited Datta’s ancestral home to pay tribute, describing him as “a popular teacher and cultural activist whose contribution to society will outlive him.”

Leaders across the political spectrum also joined in mourning. TPCC president Asish Kumar Saha, MLA Sudip Roy Barman also conveyed condolences to the bereaved family.

Born in 1948 to Dr. Manoranjan Datta, a medical practitioner, Manik Lal Datta pursued his education at Bordowali HS School and MBB College before joining Bordowali School as a teacher in 1974. He served until 2008, leaving a lasting imprint on generations of students. 

Beyond the classroom, he was deeply involved in theatre and cultural activism, dedicating much of his savings to community causes — including contributions to Jagannath Bari, the establishment of an Ashram in Melaghar, and financial assistance to the poor and needy.

His passing marks the end of an era for Bardowali, but his legacy as a teacher, cultural leader, and philanthropist will continue to inspire.
