Charilam, Nov 03: Four persons arrested on Thursday in connection with a political clash that erupted between Congress and BJP workers at Routhkhola area in Bishalgarh on Wednesday were remanded to police custody for five days, police sources said.
The five arrestees are- Prabir Saha, Bapan Saha, Sohel Rana and Madhav Debnath. They all are Congress workers.
Meanwhile, two bombs were recovered from the clash site when a team of police along with dog squad and bomb squad carried out a search on Thursday morning. The two bombs were later defused in an abandoned place.
In connection with the Congress-BJP clash, Bishalgarh police registered a suo-motto case and initiated a probe. In the course of investigation, police picked up the four persons from various places in Bishalgarh and also detained a four wheeler (WB26-BH-3242) from Agartala.
According to SDPO Bishalgarh Rahul Das, the situation is normal now and efforts are on to put all the culprits behind the bars.
During the clash that broke out on Wednesday noon after some campaign materials of BJP were allegedly damaged, a Fire Service vehicle was vandalized and five staff were injured as the Congress workers launched an attack with lethal weapons, according to sources.
A Congress leader was reportedly seen handing over a pistol to his party colleague publicly during the incident.
Later in the afternoon, the Congress workers led by Joydeb Roy Barman launched another round of attack during which two-three bombs were hurled, the sources said.
When the situation turned volatile, police fired tear gas shells and opened fire in the air to disperse the mob. A prohibitory order under section 144 Cr.P.C was also imposed to avoid any further untoward incident. The restriction was lifted on Thursday morning as the situation turned normal.
Meanwhile, three Congress workers were injured during the clash.
