In a major breakthrough against narcotics trafficking, East Agartala Police Station officers arrested two youths and seized 18 kilograms of cannabis during a routine patrol near the College Tilla Lake embankment. The operation, carried out late Saturday night, has been hailed as a significant success in the city’s ongoing anti‑drug campaign.
Police sources said the suspects were intercepted after their movements raised suspicion during patrol duty. On searching them, officers discovered a large quantity of cannabis packed for transport. Both individuals were immediately taken into custody and brought to East Agartala Police Station along with the seized contraband.
Officer‑in‑Charge Krishnadhan Sarkar confirmed the arrests, stating that the seizure was the result of vigilant patrolling. “Our team noticed suspicious activity and conducted a search, leading to the recovery of 18 kilograms of cannabis. The accused have been booked under relevant provisions of law, and investigations are underway to trace the source of the consignment and its intended destination,” Sarkar said.
Police have registered a case and initiated inquiries to determine whether the seized cannabis was part of a larger trafficking network. Investigators are focusing on identifying supply routes and potential links to organized drug syndicates operating in and around Agartala.
Authorities stressed that the anti‑drug drive will continue, with intensified patrolling and surveillance across the city and adjoining areas. The latest seizure underscores the police’s determination to curb narcotics smuggling and protect vulnerable communities from its impact.
The arrests have sent a strong message to traffickers, while residents of College Tilla and nearby localities expressed relief at the police action, noting that drug‑related activities had become a growing concern in the area.
