The Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) on Wednesday began a sit‑in protest outside the Principal’s office at GB Hospital, demanding immediate action to safeguard doctors’ security, professional dignity, and workplace protection.
The protest follows an incident involving a senior resident doctor at the Medicine OPD, which the association says has raised serious questions about the safety and respect accorded to medical professionals.
From early morning, resident doctors gathered in front of the Principal’s office, holding placards and voicing their demands. The RDA has already submitted a five‑point memorandum to the college administration, insisting that corrective measures be taken without delay.
The memorandum outlines the following demands:
Immediate removal of viral videos: All videos of the incident circulating on social media must be deleted, with corrections issued for misinformation and a public apology made. Strict measures should be enforced to prevent similar content in the future.
End to unilateral media trial: The RDA insists that no public judgment or decision be made without hearing the doctor’s version, condemning what they describe as a one‑sided “media trial.”
Ban on unauthorised filming in hospitals: Media personnel, patients, or attendants must not be allowed to take photos or videos inside wards, OPDs, or patient service areas without permission, citing risks to privacy and safety.
Legal action against false accusers: The Medical Superintendent must file an FIR against individuals who made false allegations, with strict legal consequences to follow.
Enhanced security deployment: The association demands replacement of SIS security guards with TSR jawans and stronger, more reliable security arrangements for doctors and healthcare staff.
The RDA has stressed that the protest is not limited to one incident but reflects a broader concern about the safety and dignity of medical professionals in Tripura. They argue that without a secure environment, doctors cannot perform their duties effectively, and patient care ultimately suffers.
Speaking to reporters, one of the agitating doctor said, "The protest will continue until concrete steps are taken". He emphasised that the administration must act swiftly to ensure a safe, respectful, and dignified workplace for all doctors and healthcare workers.
