New Delhi, Jul 29: The Delhi Police has come out with a short film that talks of embracing people from the Northeast rather than addressing them as Chinky, Momo, Nepali, Bahadur and Corona for their mongoloid features.
The film has been scripted by Delhi-based journalist from Tripura, Madhumita Chakraborty.
"We have a special unit -- Special Police Unit for North-Eastern Region (SPUNER). We work day and night. Whenever they (people from the Northeast) come to Delhi, they can take the assistance of our unit, especially for students. We have a dedicated team and helpline 1093," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Security) Hibu Tamang.
The purpose of the 15-minute film is to stop discrimination towards people from the Northeast. Doordarshan Kendra, Assam has already telecast it and soon it will be released on the YouTube channel of Delhi Police and its other social media platforms to assuage their feelings of insecurity.
The Delhi Police is also planning a special screening of the film for people from the Northeast living in Delhi.
The film features several celebrated personalities from the Northeast like Olympians Mary Kom, Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain and also mentions about the various initiatives of Delhi Police for people of the Northeast.
Many Indian citizens belonging to the Northeastern states, Ladakh and Darjeeling residing in metropolitan cities and towns across the country for purpose of education and employment, have been addressed in a derogatory way and even subjected to racial discrimination, the script notes.
Data shows that on an average the Delhi Police's helpline number for Northeast gets at least five calls daily on complaints like stabbing, murder, accident, non-payment of salary, rent issues, discrimination, and most commonly usage of derogatory words.
