Agartala, Aug 07: The number of Cancer cases is increasing in the state, said Medical Superintendent of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Center- Dr Gautam Majumder.
He said, regional cancer centre registered 3,050 new cases in 2021 and around 1500 new cases till August of the current year.
“At any given time there are more than 12000 cancer patients prevalent in Tripura. Out of these 12000 cancer patients total 1450 deaths occurred last year,” he told the media.
Expressing serious concern over the increasing number of cancer cases, the expert stressed on modification in the government’s policy to prevent the risk factors.
Dr. Majumder said, he feels a comprehensive policy on restriction of Tobacco, unhealthy foods and sale of alcohol is necessary to deal with the cancer cases.
“Financial condition of around 300 cancer patients, who underwent treatment outside the state, came down below poverty line though they were not socio-economically BPL,” he said, adding that 75 percent of the cancer patients are availing full treatment in ABV-RCC.
Our target is to attract those poor cancer patients, who straightway go outside state for treatment and become financially weak, to attend ABV-RCC for diagnosis and treatment, he said.
Meanwhile, a monitoring survey on cancer risk factors and health system response in that state has been conducted and Dr. Majumder along with others released the report in a press conference on Friday. Secretary of Agartala Press Club Pranab Sarkar was present.
