A late-night enforcement drive against illegal logging in Tripura’s Kanchanpur subdivision spiraled into violence when a group of alleged timber smugglers ambushed a Forest Department team, leaving seven personnel critically injured and two official vehicles vandalized.
Â
The incident unfolded in the Chandipur area under Kanchanpur Police Station after forest officials acted on intelligence reports about teak timber being transported illegally. As the team moved in to intercept, they were surrounded by armed smugglers who launched a brutal assault with machetes, spears, and sticks. Two Forest Department vehicles were smashed before the attackers fled with a large consignment of teak.
Â
The injured officials — Foresters Shantanu Debnath, Swapan Saha, Banti Mursuddi, Ujiham Reang, and Forest Guards Mintu Bhowmik, Debashish Pal, Gopikanta Tripura — were rescued by police led by Officer-in-Charge Srikanta Rudra Pal and rushed to Kanchanpur Sub-Divisional Hospital. Doctors have confirmed that several victims sustained severe injuries, with their condition reported as critical.
Â
The attack has sparked outrage across the subdivision, with residents and environmental activists warning of the growing influence of organized timber-smuggling networks. Locals allege that valuable teak has been systematically siphoned out of forest areas for years, causing massive losses to government resources and threatening ecological balance.
Â
The Forest Department has lodged a formal complaint, and police have launched an investigation. However, community leaders and activists are demanding special operations to dismantle the syndicate, arrest those responsible, and ensure strict legal action.
Â
The incident has also raised urgent questions about the safety of frontline forest personnel, who routinely face threats during anti-smuggling drives. Residents caution that unless decisive measures are taken, such violent confrontations could escalate further, undermining both law enforcement and conservation efforts in Tripura’s forests.
