Tripura to celebrate 150 years of 'Vande Mataram' with grand musical tribute

In a powerful tribute to India’s national song 'Vande Mataram', the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura will host a state-wide celebration on Wednesday, 7 November, marking the song’s 150th anniversary.

The highlight of the commemorative events will be a grand musical performance by 150 singers from across the state, united on a single platform to render the iconic patriotic anthem.

The central event, organized by Tripura Pradesh BJP, is expected to take place in front of Ujjayanta Palace, with Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and other distinguished guests in attendance. The performance aims to evoke the emotional and spiritual power of Vande Mataram, which has long served as a symbol of unity and resistance during India’s freedom struggle.

Addressing the press from BJP’s state headquarters in Krishnanagar, Agartala, Tripura BJP vice president Papiya Dutta emphasized that Vande Mataram is not merely a song, but a national emblem of patriotism. She recalled how Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, in the face of colonial oppression and famine, composed the song as a unifying mantra for the people of India. First published in his novel Anandamath in 1882, it was formally adopted as the national song in 1950 and played a pivotal role in galvanizing public sentiment during the 1905 anti-partition movement in Bengal.

Dutta added that the programme will include discussions on the song’s history and cultural significance, especially aimed at educating the younger generation about its role in India’s independence movement.

BJP spokesperson Sunit Sarkar, along with other senior leaders, was present at the press conference.
